Kiev Ukriane Things To Do
I spent two weeks in the city and kept getting emails about what to do in Kiev, so I thought I would finally take the time to put together a list of the best things I could do in Kiev on a four-day tour. This guide contains everything you need to know to visit Kiev, including some fantastic things to do on your first day in Ukraine, from the best accommodation to the best restaurants to find something off the beaten track.
While the 62-metre-high stainless steel statue is hard to miss, there are some attractions not to be missed in Kiev itself. After a stroll through the city, you can visit some of the city's most famous landmarks, such as St. George's Cathedral, the Palace of Justice and the Kremlin.
One of the best places to try varenyky, traditional Ukrainian stuffed dumplings, is the restaurant Varednychna. During the harsh Ukrainian winter, one of the best ways to hurl a large bowl of borscht in Kiev is to do so. This is actually a cool thing in Kiev in winter, when there is enough snow.
This place is widely advertised as one of the best options in Kiev, and if you are in the area (which you probably will be), it is worth a short stop. This is not one of the top things I have done in Ukraine, but it is a wonderful place to visit with children, a partner or even as a solo traveler. The Expo Center of Ukraine is located just a few blocks from downtown Kiev and is a great place to see as an alternative to entering Ukraine or as part of another Eastern European trip to Ukraine. Kiev is a fantastic city with great weather, good food and great places to spend a few days, especially in winter.
The monument is a dark and impressive experience, but it is one of the ways to learn more about Ukrainian history. This is, in my opinion, the best thing to do in Kiev, and this lesser-known Kiev museum is also one of my best visits if I really want to understand Ukrainian culture and ethnography. It is small and can be seen in about 20 minutes, so it is a great place to drop by.
Personally, I have decided not to go to Chernobyl during my time in Kiev, but I would not miss it at all, especially considering that it is only a few minutes away from Podil, where I lived. A trip from the nuclear power plant in Chern to Kiev is a must for backpacking in Ukraine and not cheap compared to the other things on this list.
If you ask me what is the best thing to do in Kiev today, I would vote for both the tiny city and the huge city squares. If you are wondering what I will do in a few days I found out that there is actually a good place in the city to eat Ukrainian street food (Kiev perepichka). I honestly believe that the chicken Kiev is a joke even in Ukraine, just as it is in Britain at a TV dinner.
